MaugaLui – From Courtrooms to Catwalks
Two respected Samoan lawyers are taking a break from their usual courtroom environment to pursue their other passion: Fashion.
Muriel Lui and Precious Chang of Lui and Chang Barristers and Solicitors in Samoa have launched their own fashion line MaugaLui which fuses edgy island style fashion with corporate wear. Their exciting new line will feature in this weekend’s Pacific Fusion Fashion Show in Otara, Auckland.
A corporate genre in the world of island fashion seems to be long overdue and so the timing couldn’t be more perfect for the duo.
“We both love modern corporate wear but we could not find in Samoa, the right balance and mix between modern corporate wear with a little Samoan edge and influence,” says Muriel.
“We identified that gap in the market and that was how the concept for MaugaLui was born. We had discussed MaugaLui about five years ago but due to the demands of our day jobs at the time, we put it on the backburner until now.
“Coming from corporate backgrounds, we knew we wanted to design for the corporate woman – to design different options for her to wear between the traditional puletasi and the modern business suits but at the same time, reflect our Samoan heritage and culture. So we design in a way where we play with modern silhouettes and mix a little Samoan edge. We want to capture the line between both classy and edgy and bring out confidence in the people that wear it.”
The business partners previously showcased their fashion line at the recent Samoa Sinnet Fashion Show and are humbled to have a second invitation to another prestigious fashion event: The Pacific Fusion Fashion Show.
“The Pacific Fusion Fashion Show in Auckland is a great opportunity to promote our line to the Pacific audience in New Zealand. We also aim to start retailing in New Zealand after that show. We envision our designs being worn by Pacific women in New Zealand and around the world!”
The lawyer-turned-designers are in awe at the evolvement of Pacific Fashion and particularly the rise of Samoan Fashion over the past few years.
“There are more than 60 fashion houses around Samoa so it is a very competitive market. Therefore entering into this market is not for the faint hearted.
“We believe everything is done in God’s time and believe that this was the perfect time for MaugaLui to launch. The people are ready for something new and something different. MaugaLui has two main aims: to be different and to be affordable. Therefore we try and bring quality and high fashion to people at very affordable prices.”
